Fishing on the Outer Banks was very slow in December except for the King Mackerel bite off of Cape Hatteras, so we headed to the Florida Keys for Christmas. The ocean and gulf fishing is always good that time of year with great catches of King Mackerel, Snapper, Yellowtails, Grouper, Spanish and Cero Mackerel. Several days we had all the fish we needed just after several hours. We only fished in the ocean a few days because of the wind but the gulf, or bay side as the locals call it was always fishable. Very short runs, 5 to 10 miles to fish the bay. If you down it that area, stop in at the Sunset Grille at the foot of the 7 mile bridge in Marathon for some of the best food in the Keys. I’m starting to book trip now for the 2017 season.
